The GOP’s fight on women’s reproductive rights continues to wage on. Here are some of the latest bills currently being proposed that limit women’s access to contraception and abortion.
Senator Roy Blunt has introduced an amendment to Obama’s mandate requiring all employers to cover contraception without a co-pay. The Blunt amendment would allow employers or insurance providers to deny health care coverage on the basis of moral or religious objections. If it passes, “a corporate CEO who doesn’t believe in birth control could simply decide to take it away from his employee’s health care coverage, ” according a video from Senate Democrats (below). The amendment will be voted in Senate tomorrow.
The Alabama Senate passed a revised version of SB12, a bill requiring women seeking abortions to undergo an invasive ultrasound. Women can now “choose” whether to undergo a medically unnecessary transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound.
There are currently four states considering laws requiring ultrasounds before abortions. The winner of the most extreme and restrictive bill goes to Pennsylvania. The legislators propose encouraging women to view and listen to the ultrasounds, among many other medically unnecessary requirements and restrictions. Long-time abortion policy analyst Elizabeth Nash said, “I’ve never seen anything like it.” Impressive, Pennsylvania.
Oklahoma’s “Personhood Act” is currently pending approval in the state House, which is predominantly Republican. This law declares that life begins at conception, giving full rights to a zygote.
