As I mentioned in last week’s WIR, a new study published in the Journal of Sexual Health found that condom use errors are very common. Researchers from the Kinsey Institute in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction reviewed 50 studies from 14 countries during 1995 to 2011 investigating condom errors and problems. Their analysis found a laundry list of serious mistakes putting users at risk for pregnancy, STDs, and HIV/AIDS. Frequent problems included condom breakage, slippage, and leakage.
Did you know that a lot of these issues could be solved with just one magical item? The cure? Lube. It increases condom effectiveness. Not just that, lubrication makes sexual encounters more pleasurable by cutting down on dry friction that many find irritating. However, only water or silicone-based lubes can be used with latex condoms and not oil-based ones, which can cause the condom to degrade or slip off. Dual-purpose! That’s right, wetter is better.
According to the review performed by the Kinsey researchers, many couples are either not using lubrication or incorrectly using it. Between 16 and 25.8 percent of participants didn’t use it. In about 4.1 percent of sexual events, couples used oil-based lube with latex condoms. In addition, participants reported great variation in experiencing broken condoms: between 0.8 percent and 40.7 percent while slippage was reported between 13.1 percent and 19.3 percent.
